Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden’s main outdoor grounds and gardens are free of charge to the public, open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk

For the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden:

  • $5 for adults
  • $4 for seniors (65+) and students
  • Free for children 5 and under, active military (Blue Star program), and Snug Harbor Member
  • Staten Island residents are admitted FREE on the first Friday of each month with proof of residency

Accessibility

Three parking lots have designated spaces for mobility-challenged visitors.

Visitors in wheelchairs can enter all areas of Snug Harbor’s campus but are advised to contact Snug Harbor Rangers if they need assistance accessing any gardens or facilities, specifically the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

The North Gate at Richmond Terrace does not have an entrance ramp and is not recommended for visitors in wheelchairs. Visitors in wheelchairs are instructed to use caution when entering narrow, rough, uneven, or steep garden paths.

Getting There

Take subway to lower Manhattan, via the 1 train to South Ferry or the 4/5 train to Bowling Green or the R train to Whitehall. Exit and walk south to blue neon Staten Island terminal to take FREE ferry. After landing in Staten Island take the S40 bus at Gate D to travel along Richmond Terrace, less than a 10-minute ride. Let the bus driver know that you want to get off at Snug Harbor.

Snug Harbor is over 180 years old! The Noble Maritime Collection in Building D has a remarkable exhibit on the history of Snug Harbor and the lives of the “snugs,” or sailors, who lived here.

Yes, to most places on campus.  Only service animals are permitted inside buildings, the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden, and the Heritage Farm. We discourage people from bringing dogs on outdoor tours for the safety and comfort of the other attendees.  Please keep your pet under your supervision and control at all times, leashed from 9 AM – 9 PM, and please clean up after it. The South Meadow lawn is a very popular spot for pet owners–check it out!

Public restrooms are located in the bottom floor of Building G (enter via Shinbone Alley) 7 days a week, and the bottom floor of Building P on Mon – Fri from 9 AM – 5 PM.  Restrooms are also available in the Music Hall (Building T) during scheduled performances.
