Getting There

To get to Ellis Island, visitors must take a ferry from either Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Statue Cruises operates the ferry service.

Ellis Island, located in New York Harbor, symbolizes the American ideal, having served as the entry point for almost 12 million immigrants seeking a new life in the United States between 1892 and 1954. Originally a tiny 3-acre plot of land, it grew over time to accommodate the influx of optimistic newcomers.

Ellis Island: Gateway to the American Dream

This historical place represents both the struggles and successes of the immigrant experience. For many, Ellis Island was their first view of the land of opportunity, but it also signaled the start of a stringent screening procedure. Immigrants went through medical exams and interviews, enduring uncertainty, and dread as they awaited clearance or rejection.

A Beacon of Hope and Resilience in American History

Despite the challenges, Ellis Island represented a beacon of hope. It welcomed people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, contributing to the rich tapestry of American society. The stories of perseverance and resilience echo through its halls, reminding us of the courage and determination that shaped the nation.

Celebrating America’s Immigrant Legacy

Today, Ellis Island is a poignant reminder of America’s immigrant legacy. This heritage is preserved at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, where visitors may learn about the immigrant experience via displays, artifacts, and personal experiences. As we reflect on its significance, we commemorate the spirit of individuals who walked through its gates, their dreams, and their lasting contributions to the fabric of the United States.
