About the Empire State Building

Nestled in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building stands as a magnificent testament to architectural prowess and human achievement. This 102-story Art Deco skyscraper, with its elegant design, has been a defining feature of the New York City skyline since its inception. The groundbreaking for this iconic structure commenced on March 17, 1930, and a mere 13 months later, on April 11, 1931, the construction was completed.

The very name “Empire State Building” draws its inspiration from the state it proudly represents, New York, often referred to as the “Empire State.” Soaring into the heavens, the Empire State Building reaches an impressive height of 1,250 feet (381.0 m), and with its antenna, it stands tall at a total height of 1,454 feet (443.2 m).

For over four decades, from its completion in 1931 until the inauguration of the World Trade Center’s first tower, the Empire State Building held the distinguished title of being the tallest structure in the world. Although it relinquished this title over time, it remains the ninth-tallest finished skyscraper in the United States, the seventh-tallest building in New York City, and a striking 54th-tallest structure globally as of 2022.

Beyond its impressive stature, the Empire State Building is not merely an office building; it serves as a symbol of resilience, human ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of New York City. Designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark and proudly listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, this architectural marvel has stood the test of time.

One of its most celebrated features is the observation decks that grace its upper floors, providing visitors with unparalleled panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis below. These decks offer a breathtaking glimpse of the city that never sleeps, capturing its dynamic energy and ever-changing skyline.

As a living testament to the evolving narrative of New York City, the Empire State Building continues to captivate the world with its timeless elegance and historical significance. It remains an enduring symbol of human achievement, a beacon of inspiration, and an iconic representation of the indomitable spirit of the city it calls home.
